Tanzania Safaris with Zuka Africa Safaris |
A Typical Hunt - We at Zuka take pride in the personalized service that we offer our clients, and the following are some suggestions and guidelines you might find informative and useful, and that will give you some idea of what to expect on arrival in Tanzania. It will also give you an idea of our modus operandi and of a typical safari day in the bush. Let me say at the outset, that, as far as possible, our safaris are tailor-made to suit the individual needs and preferences of our clients. We are flexible, and would like to make you feel free to make suggestions to either your PH or one of our management staff to make your safari more memorable, and, effectively, a life-time experience. When booking your safari, it is essential that you arrive on the day before your hunt begins and leave the day after your last hunting day. This provision of "travel days" will ensure that none of your hunting time is lost through travel arrangements.
|
You will fly into Dar es Salaam [DAR] International Airport and, to expedite the process of checking and clearing your firearms, you will be met by one of our staff as you clear customs. Our meet-and-greet policy will insure that you are ushered through the formalities with minimum delay to soon be on your way to your hotel. You will be issued a temporary import permit for your firearms and ammunition which you must retain in your possession - when you leave you will need to surrender it in order to be issued with a permit for you to export your firearms.
There are many logistical problems related to running a safari business in a country as vast and diverse as Tanzania, and because distances are great, air charter is the only practical means of accessing the hunting blocks. On the day after arriving in Dar es Salaam, in effect your first travel day, you will charter into your hunting destination, a journey of approximately one-and-a-half hours depending on which block you are hunting.

You will fly into Dar es Salaam [DAR] international airport |
On arrival in camp you will be met and welcomed by your PH and the camp staff who will assist you in settling into your new home for the duration of your safari. Then you will have the opportunity to test-fire your rifles to make sure that they are zeroed correctly and that nothing has been damaged or shifted during the flight. After the range session, all systems are "GO" for the first day of your hunt.
The normal hunting day begins with a wake-up call about an hour or so before daybreak. After a breakfast of your choice, the hunt begins. You will normally be accompanied by your PH, two trackers, and a government game scout. In Tanzania many of the PHs have drivers, which means that your PH will be able to sit "upstairs" with you on the hunting seat and will be able to assist with the spotting of game and answer any questions that you might have. Once again, there are no hard-and-fast rules pertaining to the hunting day. The arrangement is flexible and will depend very much on which animal you are hunting. If you are after elephant or need to travel long distances on a daily basis to check baits, your PH might suggest a couple of nights fly camping in the bush, which is an experience in itself!

As the midday hour approaches the game tends to lie up in the shade and so, too, will you. The camp packs a picnic lunch that you can enjoy, and then it is possible to have a siesta during the hot hours before continuing your hunt into the afternoon and evening. On your arrival back at camp, the staff will prepare a hot shower for you and then you can relax, enjoy a drink, and sit around a fire under the African sky before dinner. This is the part of your safari where many memories are made. It is a time for introspection and a time to relive the events of the day. It is a time where friendships are cemented, many of which go on to last a lifetime. Your dinner is a three-course meal, and our chefs are experts at preparing venison from the game that you have shot adding the perfect finishing touches to the hunting experience. Then you can retire to your tent replete, with the prospect of a good night's rest and new events and adventures in the morning.
At the conclusion of your hunt you will need to complete the necessary paper work with your PH who will also make sure that your trophy tags are correctly labeled and attached to your animals. (Global SPorting Safaris will organize tags with your name and address on them, as well as the shipping address, for you to bring with you.) You will then take the return charter to Dar es Salaam where you will be met by one of our staff who will assist you with departure formalities. From there it is the long flight home, with ample opportunity to mull over the highlights of your safari, and more importantly, to start planning the next one!

Where we hunt |
Muhwesi - This is the biggest of our concessions, some 6 000 square miles. The block is situated on the south-eastern boundary of the Selous. The terrain varies, with extensive areas of rolling Miombo woodland, carved up by river valleys with a limited flood plain habitat. The camp is built on the Mtetetsi River. The block is extensive and large areas are, as yet, un-hunted as we are still developing the road network. The predominant big game species in the area is elephant which come out of the Selous late in the season to feed on the cashew nuts grown by the villagers adjacent to the block. The area also supports a healthy leopard population and is frequented by lion as well. The main species of plains game are eland, sable, zebra and reedbuck which tend to be found on the green vlei areas bordering the Miombo. A 21-day license and a fit and active client who can walk, should produce some impressive results in this large and diverse block. There is a good chance of taking two of the big five, plus some quality plains game, like eland and sable.

Kabojo - This block is in the heart of the Masai Steppe, with the local villages being an integral part of the hunting experience. It is totally different from our other blocks and is characterized by vast areas of open, flat grassland or mbugas, and semi-desert thorn scrub. It supports a wide variety of game which is unique to this type of habitat, such a fringe eared Oryx, lesser Kudu and Kirk's dik dik, to name a few. The leopard feed on the Masai stock, and every season some good- sized cats are taken here. Prospects for lesser kudu are also excellent. Kabojo is the destination for a specialized plains game hunt, with the option of taking a big leopard, or as an inclusion in your itinerary, to collect the species not found in our Selous and Southern blocks.

|
Tunduru - This concession is adjacent to Muhwesi and is situated on the south-western border of the Selous. The block is 3 500 square miles, and, like Muhwesi, comprises mainly Miombo woodland partitioned by the rivers draining the area. In the north of the area for a towards the Mbarangandu River, the Miombo gives way to large open green areas of inland drainage and a flood plain habitat. The area supports large herds of buffalo as well as a number of "Daga Boys" who reside in the thick riparian forest along the rivers, and which constitute an exciting and challenging hunt. The block also yields very good elephant, leopard and lion each season. Tunduru is primarily a dangerous game block. If you are looking a classic, dangerous game safari in the old style, with plenty of walking, tracking and scouting, then this is the area for you.

|
Mahenge South - This is a vast open area concession on the western border of the Selous adjacent to the Ikuria block. We only started hunting the area this year, and a new and idyllic camp was constructed on the banks of the Luhombero River. The terrain is very similar to that of Ikuria. Some impressive animals were taken during the first season, including a very good elephant and a number of quality buffalo. The area also supports a good cross-section of plains game, particularly Lichtenstein's hartebeest and Roosevelt Sable. This is a vast area and, like Muhwesi, we are still developing the road network. The hunting potential of Mahenge South is yet to be tapped, and if 2004 is anything to go by, we are confident that future seasons will yield good results.

Lukula - in the south-western sector of the Selous, is our most dramatic block. The area comprises a very diverse habitat from the flood plains of the Lukula, Luwegu and Chi Rivers to areas of dense riparian forest which gives way to rolling hills and steep ridges. The area is inhabited by a wide variety of plains and dangerous game, ranging from the tiny Klipspringer to Hippopotamus and numerous breeding herds of elephant and buffalo. Every year the block yields good Lion and Leopard. Buffalo are plentiful in the area and it is possible to be really selective in one's trophy choice. This block is a popular destination among our clients. The picturesque camp on the banks of the beautiful Luwegu River completes the scenario, and makes for an enjoyable and memorable safari experience.

Ikuria - This concession is situated in the western central sector of the Selous and is characterized by extensive areas of Miombo interspersed with green vlei or valleys. A wide range of plains game, including sable, zebra and Lichtenstein's hartebeest can be taken here, as well as the normal dangerous game species. A late-season hunt, in particular, gives the sportsman an excellent opportunity of taking a wide variety of plains and dangerous game with the possibility of an especially good buffalo.
